Ingredients

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • ½ cup molasses

  • 1 egg

  • ¼ tsp ground cloves

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • For Decoration

  • Royal icing

  • Sprinkles or candies

Directions

  • In a bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until smooth.
  • Add molasses and egg and mix well.
  • In another bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, and spices.
  • Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture to form dough.
  • Wrap dough and chill for 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Roll dough on a floured surface and cut into shapes.
  • Place cookies on a baking sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes.
  • Cool completely before decorating with icing.
