Origin Easy Salted Caramel Apple Pull-Apart Bread

This pull-apart bread takes inspiration from classic cinnamon rolls and monkey bread but adds a delicious twist with caramelized apples. Popular in American bakeries, it brings together the comforting flavors of apple pie and soft bread in a fun, shareable form.

What I Love About This Recipe

The combination of soft, pillowy bread with spiced apples and salted caramel is irresistible. Each layer peels apart easily, making it perfect for sharing. The balance of sweet and salty flavors makes it even more indulgent. Plus, it’s a great way to use fresh apples in a creative way.

Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 medium apples, peeled and finely chopped

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

Directions

  • In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add melted butter, egg, salt, and flour. Stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead for 6-8 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rise for 1 hour until doubled.
  • In a separate bowl, mix chopped apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter.
  • Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Spread the apple mixture evenly over it.
  • Cut into strips, stack them, and slice into squares. Arrange them in a greased loaf pan.
  • Let the dough rise for another 20-30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  • For caramel sauce, heat sugar in a saucepan over medium heat until melted and amber in color. Stir in butter and heavy cream carefully. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then add salt.
  • Drizzle caramel sauce over warm bread before serving.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for a slight tartness that balances the caramel.
  • If short on time, store-bought biscuit dough can be used instead.
