Exquisite Pizza Sauce

If you are looking for the best homemade pizza sauce that requires absolutely no time on the stove, this recipe is your answer. Perfectly weeknight-friendly, this exquisite sauce uses a simple one-bowl method to create a complex, pizzeria-quality flavor without any cooking.

Building Umami and Depth

While many traditional sauces require hours of simmering to develop flavor, this recipe relies on potent flavor enhancers like anchovy paste and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. These ingredients introduce naturally occurring glutamates that instantly give the sauce a deep, savory richness. To balance the intense concentration and acidity of the tomato paste, a touch of honey is added.

The most crucial step in this no-cook method is allowing the mixed sauce to rest for 30 minutes before spreading it on your dough. This resting period gives the dried herbs time to fully hydrate and release their essential oils, ensuring a cohesive, perfectly blended sauce in every bite.

Ingredients

  • The Base:

  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste

  • 6 fluid ounces warm water (110°F / 45°C)

  • 3 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese

  • 2 tbsp honey

  • 1 tsp minced garlic

  • 1 tsp anchovy paste

  • The Spices & Seasonings:

  • 3/4 tsp onion powder

  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/4 tsp dried marjoram

  • 1/4 tsp dried basil

  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper

  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

  • 1/8 tsp dried red pepper flakes

  • Salt, to taste

Directions

  • Prep: Gather all of your ingredients and a medium-sized mixing bowl.
  • Combine: Place the tomato paste, warm water, Parmesan cheese, honey, minced garlic, anchovy paste, onion powder, oregano, marjoram, basil, black pepper, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, and salt into the bowl.
  • Mix: Whisk the ingredients together vigorously until everything is well blended, ensuring you break up any clumps of the grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Rest: Set the sauce aside at room temperature for 30 minutes. This allows the dried herbs to hydrate and the complex flavors to fully meld together.
  • Serve: Spread the prepared sauce evenly over your favorite pizza dough, add your desired toppings, and bake your pizza!

Notes

  • The Dry Spice Hack: If you plan on making this sauce frequently, reviewers highly recommend pre-mixing the dry spices! Multiply all the dry ingredients (onion powder through red pepper flakes) by 8, mix them together, and store them in a small airtight jar. The next time you make the sauce, simply measure out 2 teaspoons of your custom spice blend.
  • Anchovy Paste Alternative: While the anchovy paste adds incredible savory depth without tasting “fishy,” you can omit it if you prefer or substitute it with a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of MSG.
