Origin of Philly Cheesesteak Dip:

The Philly cheesesteak originated in Philadelphia in the early 1930s, created by Pat Olivieri, a hot dog vendor who decided to grill thinly sliced beef with onions and serve it on a roll. Over time, this humble sandwich became an iconic American favorite. The dip version takes inspiration from the original, combining its signature ingredients—beef, onions, peppers, and cheese—into a convenient, shareable format that’s perfect for entertaining.

Why It’s Loved:

This dip is adored for its rich, hearty flavors and creamy texture. The combination of tender beef, sautéed vegetables, and melted cheese creates a comforting experience that’s hard to resist. Its versatility makes it ideal for any occasion, whether you’re hosting a party or enjoying a cozy night in. Plus, serving it with dippable sides like soft pretzels or baguette slices adds an interactive element that everyone loves

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) ribeye steak or sirloin, thinly sliced

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • 8 oz (225g) cream cheese, softened

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise

  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Directions

  • Prepare the Beef and Vegetables:
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers, cooking until softened and caramelized, about 8–10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, add the remaining butter and cook the thinly sliced beef until browned and cooked through. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Once done, remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Assemble the Dip:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, half of the provolone cheese, and half of the mozzarella cheese. Mix well.
Fold in the cooked beef, caramelized onions, and bell peppers. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish.

  • Bake the Dip:
Top the dip with the remaining provolone and mozzarella cheeses. Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden on top.
  • Serve and Enjoy:
Let the dip cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with optional hot peppers or fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm with pretzel bites, toasted baguette slices, or chips.

Notes

  • Use high-quality deli-sliced beef or ask your butcher to slice it thinly for ease of cooking.
