Origin Sour Cream and Chive Skillet Dinner Rolls
Inspired by classic American skillet breads and the creamy tang of Eastern European-style sour cream, this recipe combines the best of both worlds into one delicious, herb-flecked roll.
What I Love About This Recipe
The sour cream adds tenderness and richness, while fresh chives bring a mild oniony bite. Baking them in a skillet gives that perfect crispy edge with a soft, pull-apart center.

kcalIngredients
2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
¾ cup warm water (about 110°F / 45°C)
1 tbsp sugar
2½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
½ cup sour cream
2 tbsp melted butter (plus more for brushing)
¼ cup chopped fresh chives
Directions
- Activate yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.
- Mix dough: Stir in flour, salt, sour cream, melted butter, and chives. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead: Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth.
- First rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Shape rolls: Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal balls. Place in a greased cast iron skillet or round baking dish.
- Second rise: Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake rolls for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown.
- Brush with butter while hot, and serve warm.
Notes
- Use dried chives in a pinch, but fresh adds the best flavor.
- Add a sprinkle of flaky salt or garlic butter on top for extra flair.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container; reheat in the oven for best texture.
